Boat capsizes near Libya, 42 migrants missing

42 migrants, including Sudanese, Somalis, Cameroonians and Nigerians, are missing and suspected of dying after their boat capsized off the coast of Libya.

The ship had set sail from the city of Zuwara on November 3. There were 49 people on board. Seven of them survived six days at sea and were rescued on November 8.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) warns of the 'urgent need for safe passage and more effective rescue operations' in the Central Mediterranean, where over 1,000 migrants have lost their lives this year.

Human rights groups and UN agencies accuse the Libyan coastguard of violence and violations of migrants' rights, while European search and rescue coalitions have suspended cooperation with Libya because of these abuses.

The Central Mediterranean remains the most used route for migrants to the EU, with over 58,000 crossing attempts so far this year, while Libya has become a major transit point.
