Poland, prosecutors seek detention for former Justice Minister

The Polish Attorney General's Office has requested that former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro be investigated over corruption allegations.
The Polish parliament cleared the way for the investigation a week ago by lifting Ziobro's immunity as an opposition lawmaker.
From 2015 to 2023, Ziobro was Minister of Justice in the conservative nationalist government – led by the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party.
The public prosecutor and the new liberal government led by former EU Council President Donald Tusk accuse him of corruption and abuse of office.
Specifically, there are a total of 26 criminal offenses, including suspicion of founding and membership in a criminal organization and suspicion of embezzlement of the equivalent of 35 million euros ($40 million).
According to investigators, the 55-year-old faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
The former minister has denied the allegations, calling them "false and fabricated" and spoke of "another phase of revenge" by the prime minister.
However, Ziobro will not go straight to prison for the time being. He is currently in Hungary and has also met with Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Last December, Ziobro's former deputy, Marcin Romanowski, who is also wanted by the public prosecutor's office, fled to Hungary and was granted political asylum.
It is expected that Ziobro will follow this example to avoid prosecution.
