His beginnings are as an ophthalmologist and with the ambition to stay out of politics in a simple life; after graduating in medicine in Syria, he specialized in ophthalmology in London, where he lived out of the limelight. Bashar al Assad, born in 65' in Damascus, was the child of a powerful family, whose father had ruled Syria for three decades, but he was not distinguished for being Hafez's successor. But the turning point happened, after the sudden death of his brother and family pressure, where he took power in a Syria hoping for change. In 1994, Bashar's fortunes changed drastically, from a quiet professional to a politician who gradually began to adopt the authoritarian rhetoric of his family. With the death of his father Hafez, Bashar took power at the age of 34. Instead of reform, Assad chose the path of repression, using brute force to crush the opposition and causing one of the world's biggest humanitarian crises.
The world media reports that his period in power has left devastating consequences for Syria: over 500,000 dead, millions of refugees and a country divided between fear and hope for a future without the Assad regime.
