German authorities are investigating the leak of an audio recording in which German military officers allegedly discussed support for Ukraine, including the possible use of Taurus missiles.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz called it a " very serious matter" after the audio was released in Russia by state media Russia Today, adding that the German government was working to clarify the incident " very carefully, very intensively and very quickly ," the news agency reported. Reuters news.
During the recorded conversation, military officials also reportedly discussed potential targets, including the Kerch Bridge linking Russia and occupied Crimea.
Germany's military counterintelligence service has launched an investigation to find out " whether internal communications within the air force" may have been intercepted, the German defense ministry said. Berlin has been reluctant to supply Kiev with powerful missiles, an issue that is tearing apart the country's ruling coalition.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the audio recording published in Russian media " a blatant self-exposure" . Speaking to reporters in Antalya, Turkey, Lavrov spoke of "the cunning plans of (the German armed forces), which became apparent due to the release of this audio recording.
A spokesman for the German defense ministry said it could not confirm the authenticity of the recording, but the Federal Office for the Military Counterintelligence Service is investigating the matter and all necessary steps will be taken.
