The fall of the Assad regime, the head of the EU foreign policy: Terrible scenarios can be repeated, we must avoid them
The European Union's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, is concerned that Syria could violently disintegrate like neighboring Iraq, or Libya and Afghanistan if its territorial integrity and minority rights are not protected.
The EU's foreign policy chief also said on Tuesday that the fall of the government was "a huge blow" to Assad's supporters in Russia and Iran.
"The transition will present great challenges in Syria and in the region," Kallas told EU lawmakers during a special session.
"There are legitimate concerns about the risks of sectarian violence, the resurgence of extremists and a governance vacuum, all of which must be avoided. We must avoid repeating the terrible scenarios of Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan", she added.
Kallas stated that among "many wider consequences", the fall of the government showed that Assad's supporters in Russia and Iran "had no interest in being present for the consequences".
"They are weakened, distracted and stretched in other theaters in the wider Middle East, but also in Ukraine," Kallas said.
