"Eastern Guard" - Mark Rutte announces: NATO launches mission to strengthen borders with Russia

Following the violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones, NATO has announced the launch of a new mission called "Eastern Sentry", aimed at strengthening defenses on the Alliance's eastern flank.

The news was announced by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during a press conference where he strongly condemned the incident with Russian drones, describing it as "unacceptable and dangerous."

“We cannot accept that Russian drones enter the airspace of Europe, NATO or any ally,” Rutte said. “That is why we are increasing our defenses.”

Strengthening with new military equipment

According to the commander of NATO forces in Europe, General Alexus Grynkewich, new military units will be deployed within the framework of this mission, including:

He stressed that the mission will require a new defense plan, while the aim is to give more flexibility and reaction power to the defense of allies in Eastern Europe.

Eastern Province – “the front line”

Rutte and Grynkewich describe NATO's eastern flank as the "first line of defense," emphasizing the danger posed by its proximity to Russian territory.

"Russian missiles reach Tallinn and Vilnius faster than Madrid or London. Even a single drone could endanger the entire Alliance," Rutte warned.

He added that the recent drone incident, regardless of whether it was intentional or not, constitutes an irresponsible act on Russia's part and increases the risk of a serious escalation.

"Even if it was not intentional, the result is the same. If it was, it is even more serious. But in both cases, it is unacceptable," Rutte declared.

General Grynkewich noted that this was the largest incursion of Russian drones into NATO airspace to date, comparing it to previous incidents, which were more limited in scale and duration.
