The mysterious disease in the Congo raises the alarm in Italy

A mysterious disease that has killed 79 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, most of them children, has sparked global concern. The Ministry of Health in Italy has ordered increased vigilance in ports and airports, especially for flights from Congo. Local authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO) are working to determine the cause of the outbreak.

The case was reported in Kwango province, in a remote area where health infrastructure and potable water are lacking. So far, symptoms such as fever, cough, headache and difficulty breathing have mainly been observed in children under the age of five. WHO has excluded Covid-19 as the cause, while a respiratory pathogen or a disease such as malaria or measles remains possible.

Epidemiologists point out that the high mortality, about 30% of cases, is worrying. Specialists are comparing the disease to hemorrhagic diseases like Ebola, but the symptoms are different. Italian health experts have called for increased attention to the situation, stressing that such viruses can spread quickly in a globalized world.

Meanwhile, Congolese authorities and international teams are investigating and securing samples for further analysis in specialized laboratories. It remains unclear whether we are dealing with a new pathogen or an existing disease with an unusual presentation.
