US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the US "intercepted several missiles" that Iran fired at Israel.
" We condemn this wild act of aggression by Iran", he said, and "we call on it to stop any further attacks" .
On Tuesday, Iran fired several missiles at Israel in retaliation for what it said was Israel's aggression against its allies in Lebanon and Gaza.
Iran also warned that Israel would face "devastating attacks" if it responded.
Austin said the US is closely monitoring the situation and is in constant contact with its allies and partners.
" I am deeply proud of the skill and courage of American troops who helped save lives from Iran's attack and who continue to support Israel's defense ," Austin said.
He announced that he also spoke with his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, over the phone.
" The minister and I expressed mutual appreciation for Israel's coordinated defense against nearly 200 ballistic missiles fired by Iran and pledged to remain in close contact ," Austin said.
Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said that "Iran was wrong" with the attack and that it "will pay" for it.
The United Nations and the European Union repeated calls for a ceasefire, while the UN Security Council is expected to meet today to discuss the issue./REL
