The US calls on Turkey and NATO countries: Stop importing energy, oil and gas

Washington's position, which Donald Trump has expressed many times recently, regarding the interruption of Russian energy imports by NATO allies, was reiterated by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary Marco Rubio, during their meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

As reported in the relevant State Department announcement, the two US government officials "noted President Trump's call to all NATO allies to stop purchasing Russian energy in order to help end the ongoing war in Ukraine."

According to available data, Turkey is the third largest importer of Russian crude oil after China and India, while it imports large quantities of Russian natural gas. Cooperation also extends to the field of nuclear energy, as the nuclear power plant under construction in Akkuyu is the result of a Russian-Turkish intergovernmental agreement and is based on Russian technology.

This was the second time in just two months that Washington has publicly pressured Ankara to stop importing hydrocarbons from Russia, as it functions as a hub for circumventing sanctions aimed at weakening Moscow's war machine.

The first was during Trump's meeting with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in late September at the White House.

"The best thing he could do is not buy oil and gas from Russia," the US president noted at the time.

Sales of oil, oil products, and gas have traditionally been a very large part of Russia's budget revenues and a critical source of financing the war in Ukraine.
