The shelter of the train station in Serbia collapses, 8 people lose their lives
Eight people have lost their lives after a reinforced concrete shelter at the entrance of a train station in the Serbian city of Novi Sad collapsed. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said that two more people were hospitalized with serious injuries, while rescuers contacted two individuals who are still under the rubble.
"Eight bodies were pulled from the ruins, two people are in the hospital, but the condition of one person is very serious and his legs were amputated. We are in contact with two people under the rubble. We are currently working on their release. We will see what else will be found under the ruins", said Dacic.
Among the people rescuers are communicating with who have not yet been pulled out are a woman and a girl about 14 years old, he said.
Dacic emphasized that nearly 80 rescuers from several cities are participating in the rescue. "The action is extremely difficult and will last a few more hours," he said.
Emergency crews are on the scene as bulldozers clear the rubble in search of survivors.
Asked who is responsible for the accident, he said that now the focus should be on rescuing people from the wreckage.
"This is one of the most difficult days in the post-war history of Novi Sad and a terrible tragedy. On behalf of the Government and all the citizens of Serbia, I would like to express my condolences to the families of the victims. And to thank all the rescuers who are fighting to help people under the ruins," said Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević.
He added that he will insist that those responsible are found and those who should warn the authorities that some things need to be fixed.
