Volcano erupts in Indonesia, 9 victims are reported, thousands more evacuated

"At least 9 people died due to the eruptions of the volcano of Mount Leotobi Laki-Laki in eastern Indonesia," the authorities announced.
The residents of nearby villages were immediately ordered to evacuate.
Lava flowed about 4 kilometers from the crater, burning and damaging residents' homes, including a convent of Catholic nuns. Authorities are still collecting data on the number of evacuees and damaged buildings.

Indonesia's national volcanology agency raised the alert level to maximum in the area and urged residents and tourists not to engage in any activity within a radius of at least seven kilometers around the crater.
Indonesia is an area of high seismic activity on multiple tectonic plates.
This eruption follows a series of eruptions of various volcanoes in Indonesia. In May, a volcano on the remote island of Halmahera, Mount Ibu, led to the evacuation of people from seven villages.
North Sulawesi's Ruang volcano also erupted in May and prompted authorities to evacuate more than 12,000 people.
