A Russian agent has told a London court about sending a "real s*ksi" to "honeytrap" an award-winning journalist in a spy plot.

"Rupert Ticz", known as Austrian national Jan Marsalek, exchanged a series of messages with top spy Orlin Roussev in relation to the operation on Bellingcat investigative journalist Christo Grozev in 2021, the trial at London's Old Bailey was told, according to media reports. the foreigner.

The pair discussed creating a fake romance between Mr Grozev and London-based beautician Vanya Gaberova in a coded chat.

Gaberova, 30, had traveled to Valencia in Spain as part of a team to spy on Mr Grozev at a conference at the Palace Hotel, which was also attended by Bellingcat founder Eliot Higgins, the jury was told.

Roussev had noted that Grozev had "very quickly" accepted a Facebook request from Gaberova.

On September 28, 2021, he told Marsalek that their target "seems attached and in love with Vanya" and had started "liking" her photos and posts.

"We can slowly move on to romance. Slowly push for a date," he wrote in one message.

Marsalek asked if she "would be up for it" and warned, "Let's wait a little bit, let's not underestimate the guy and his paranoia."

"I hope she doesn't fall for him. I've had that problem before with a 'honey' trap," he added.

Roussev continued: "You need girls who are strong, confident and driven by independence. Vanya is very, very persuasive and very independent... [a] real s*ksi bitch."

Prosecutor Alison Morgan KC told jurors that Gaberova had engaged in capturing surveillance photos of Mr. Grozev at the conference.

"Roussev would later seek to use facial recognition software to check that the image showed Christo Grozev with Higgins together," she said.

Jurors heard that Roussev, 46, of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and another defendant, Biser Dzhambazov, 43, of Harrow, north-west London, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to spy for Russia.

Bulgarian national Gabverova, Katrin Ivanova, 33, and Tihomir Ivanov Ivanchev, 39, are on trial at the Old Bailey on suspicion of being part of the same UK-based spy ring.

Meanwhile, the court session was postponed until tomorrow morning.
