The Spanish do not stop, mega protest against tourists at the weekend

Spain is suffering from mass tourism. The Iberian country is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Last year, the country of 46 million people registered a total of 85 million tourists. On average, there were over 1.8 travelers per inhabitant. And this year, according to forecasts, the boom that appeared after the pandemic will continue - with an increase of about 12 percent. However, city dwellers are increasingly suffering from the influx of tourists. The quality of life is declining and the housing shortage is increasing.
Many Spaniards reacted with various protests across the country this summer. "Tourists go home", chanted people on the streets of Barcelona and Malaga in the south of Spain, but also in the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, where there have been repeated demonstrations since last May.
The next protest will be held in Mallorca this weekend. On Sunday, July 21, activists will meet in the capital Palma at 19:00 in the Parc de les Estacions National Park. Protesters will also travel from surrounding villages by bus. This is followed by a protest march through the city. Participating groups have announced that they will also visit cafes and bars on the promenade of El Molinar and in the popular coastal resort of S'Arenal.
Due to the planned mega-protest, some tourists feel uncomfortable, as reported by various media. At the Barcelona protest, some protesters made foreign guests feel unwelcome: they sprayed tourists with water pistols.
The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA) also mentions some risks in its travel advice for Spain, but especially for Barcelona: "exercise extreme caution at demonstrations and follow the instructions of local authorities," it says.
