Thailand legalizes same-sex marriage
Thailand becomes the first country in Southeast Asia to overwhelmingly approve a bill legalizing same-sex marriage.

According to the Associated Press, Thailand is the third country in all of Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, along with Taiwan and Nepal.

The marriage equality bill, which gives full legal, financial and medical rights to partners of either sex, passed the House of Representatives shortly before the end of the previous parliamentary session in April, with the approval of 400 of the 415 members.

However, as of today, Tuesday, June 18, the draft law has been finalized, as 130 of the 152 members present voted in favor, 4 voted against and 18 abstained.

The bill now needs King Maha Vajiralongkorn's proforma assent, followed by publication in the Government Gazette, which will set a date within 120 days when it will come into effect.
