Trump warns: I may order Israel to resume fighting in Gaza if Hamas violates ceasefire
US President Donald Trump said he would consider allowing Israeli forces to resume their offensive in the Gaza Strip if Hamas does not respect the commitments of the ceasefire agreement.
"Israel will go back to those ways as soon as I tell them to," Trump said during a brief telephone conversation with American television network CNN.
According to him, “if Israel could go in and hit them, they would.” Asked what would happen if Hamas refused to disarm, Trump repeatedly replied: “If Israel could go in and break them, they would.”
Trump acknowledged that Hamas has not yet returned most of the 28 bodies of the hostages that were expected, but described the release of the 20 live hostages as "extraordinary" and of great importance.
Commenting on videos and reports of executions of people Hamas accuses of being collaborators with Israel, Trump said the issue “will be resolved quickly” and that Hamas “is going in and cleaning up the gangs, the violent gangs.” When the reporter asked if the people shot could have been innocent civilians, Trump said: “I’m investigating… we’ll find out. It could be gangs and other things.”
Regarding his efforts to convince Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept the ceasefire, Trump said briefly: "I had to keep them in check... I discussed it with Bibi."
