Turkey reopens its embassy in Syria

Turkey will reopen its embassy in Syria within the day, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced.

"The staff of the embassy in Damascus "are on their way" and the delegation "will start acting tomorrow", said Fidan in an interview with the NTV television network.

The Turkish embassy was closed in 2012, after a civil war was spreading in Syria.

On Sunday, a rebel alliance led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the former Syrian wing of al-Qaeda, overthrew the authoritarian regime of President Bashar al-Assad, in power for 24 years.
Turkey, which supported rebel groups during the war, is now seen as perhaps the most influential foreign actor.
