Historic visit, Trump hosts Syrian President al-Sharaa at the White House

US President Donald Trump welcomed the interim president of Syria, Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was previously one of the main leaders of the jihadist organization Al-Nusra, to the White House in Washington.

The meeting took place at a time when reports are circulating about assassination plots against the Syrian leader.

According to international media, talks between Trump and al-Sharaa are expected to focus on Syria's political future, regional stability and the fight against extremism in the Middle East.

According to American media, this is a historic event, as it is the first visit by a Syrian president to the US since 1946.

A former jihadist rebel who took power after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, al-Sharaa aims to end Syria's decades of international isolation.

Trump meets with al-Sharaa six months after their first meeting in Saudi Arabia, where the US leader announced plans to lift sanctions on Damascus. Just days earlier, Washington had officially declared that the former al-Qaeda commander was no longer considered an "active terrorist."

According to Reuters, al-Sharaa arrived at the White House without the usual ceremonies reserved for official visits by foreign leaders, entering through a side entrance, invisible to journalists.
