Massive fire engulfs oil refinery in Kurdistan, flames defy firefighters

More than 30 fire engines landed in Kurdistan's Erbil on Thursday morning to put out a massive fire that engulfed the local oil refinery.
The civil defense forces said that a sudden explosion in the oil tank inside the refinery stimulated the rapid spread of flames in the surrounding premises. The incident took place in Al-Kuwer area.
"I was near the refinery when I heard the loud explosion," said one injured witness, while many others on the job reported breathing problems.
The area where the flames spread is used for oil extraction and refining. Their complex construction made extinguishing operations last several hours.
In October, a fire engulfed the asphalt factory in the town of Arbat, killing one worker. On Sunday, in a village south of Sulaimani, about 300 cattle were killed.
According to data from the Kurdistan Regional Police, in 2022, 7,546 fire incidents were reported in the country.
