Prices of agricultural products increased up to 9 times more than inflation

During 2023, the average inflation was 4.7%, but for some agricultural products that are the basis of the basket, the price increase was 3-9 times higher than inflation.

Recently updated data from INSTAT relating to price changes in agricultural products show that last year the price of milk increased in the range of 18-43 percent, compared to 2022.

The increase at these levels of the price of milk, a basic item in the consumption basket and recommended every day for the diets of children and adults, was up to 9 times more than the overall price change.

After milk, grapes also had the highest annual price increase in 2022 at around 36.2% followed by poultry meat which increased by 28%, citrus fruits by 26% and olives by 23.8%.

In total, the prices of agricultural products increased by 14.1 percent during the last year or about 3 times more than inflation.

Only cereals were down 17% last year, reflecting the fall after high prices created by the war in Ukraine in 2022.

Fruits and vegetables are an important sector of agricultural production in Albania. Official data shows that about 20% of the consumption basket for Albanian citizens is focused on fruits and vegetables, making it an important part of the daily consumption of every family.

Fruit and vegetable prices also increased by over 10%. Vegetables and fruits constitute one of the most productive and important sub-sectors of Albanian agriculture, with good opportunities for domestic growth and export.

The prices of agricultural products are often unfair, as it has been verified that the collection prices in farms have decreased, while in the minority markets there is an increase.

The collection points in most cases collect the farmers' product without a price and do not issue VAT invoices, and this has consequences for the farmers, because the farmer is not familiar with the real price at which the product is sold in the local market or the price with it which this product was sold for export.

Producers complained this year about fixing the purchase price of products from all collection points. Invoices that declare collection points and do not represent the real price, which according to farmers is done in order to avoid tax obligations.

On the other hand, in the minority markets in Tirana, the prices for all agricultural products have experienced a double-digit increase./ Monitor
