Depopulation/ Abandonment of the village leaves the olive trees 'without a lord', takes the vineyards and orchards to the 'road'
The depopulation of the villages and the growing emigration have pushed the farmers to rent out the real estate, thus trying to put it to work but also to receive income.
And it's not just about barren or unproductive lands, but also about olive groves that generate a significant amount of annual income if they are properly serviced, as well as vineyards that, in addition to the direct sale of the product, are processed into wine, cider , brandy.
Referring to the farmer's portal, where the agricultural lands that are leased throughout the country are listed, it seems that a significant weight is occupied by olive groves and vineyards.
Specifically, there are a total of 4,379 plots listed for rent, most of which are occupied by arable land, about 2,768 plots, since for various reasons, including emigration, they have been left fallow and the leasing gives them the opportunity to create income to farmers wherever they are.
Meanwhile, there are 649 plots with orchards, 482 plots with vineyards and 412 olive groves with different surfaces which are on the rental market. As for the olive groves, most of them are located in Berat, Fushë-Kruje, Durrës, Kuçovo, Përmet and Vlorë. While most of the vineyards are located in Berat, Kurbin, Lezhë, Përmet and Vlorë.
Recently, the olive has been considered as one of the most profitable cultivars for farmers, since the demand is oriented towards the local production of olive oil and also, the tourism boom has made this demand higher. On the other hand, the doors have also been opened for export, mainly with Italy. This year there seems to be a good production and currently the sale price of olive oil varies at 700 ALL/liter.
