But more details about this community were given to us by Gentian Mara, a theologian who was invited to the studio and studied in Syria from 2003 to 2011.
He emphasized that there are 4 important personalities of Albanian origin not only in Syria, but in the entire Islamic world.
They are Muhamed Nasrudin Albani, Vehbi Sulejman Gavoçi, who has mastered Albanian very well, Abdul Kadër Arnauti and Shuaip Arnauti.
But why are there so many Albanians in Syria?
" What has to do with Albania, their emigration is almost at the time of King Zog. The changes in Albania for some were not conceived as religious rights, so they chose who would emigrate to Istanbul and who to Damascus.
At that time, Sulejman Gavoçit, the father of Vehbi Sulejman Gavoçit, who was a prominent scholar in our years, settled and others followed him. A community is built, they build a mosque in Damascus.
It is one of the big mosques in Damascus, today it is called "Faith Mosque ". It was built by Sulejman Gavoçi from Shkodra and he also used it as a learning center for the Albanians there," said Mara.
He said that there are also neighborhoods with Albanians in Damascus, where Albanian is still spoken in their homes. For those who have left, they have kept the designations in the dishes, etc.
" Those who are in the neighborhood preserve Albanian. Those who are separated from the neighborhood keep only denominations, be it dishes, etc. The neighborhood continues to preserve Albanian, they speak Albanian in their homes. In Albania, we have descendants of the Gavoç family who have returned as a result of the crisis. One of them was one of Sulejman Gavoçi's sons, Shefqet Gavoçi, who passed away last year ," said Mara.
