Diabetes, the disease of the century

( Today is World Diabetes Day )

During the emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic, a comparison caught my attention: "The diabetes pandemic is like an unstoppable, irreversible rise in sea level, while the COVID-19 pandemic is like an isolated tidal wave that follows low tide…”.

SCARY FIGURES

According to recently published estimates, by 2050 there will be more than 1.3 billion people with diabetes worldwide. And… diabetes with its complications is a disease that makes life difficult, has a high mortality rate and worsens many other diseases.

On the other hand, the global health costs related to diabetes are estimated to increase to 1054 billion dollars by 2045. These figures would devastate any health system. Furthermore, it is predicted that by 2045, three out of four adults with diabetes will be in low- and middle-income countries (including Albania) and currently, only 10% of people with diabetes in these countries receive appropriate care based on diabetes guidelines.

NEED TO CHANGE COURSE…

Endless studies are published every day about diabetes, about mechanisms, epidemiology, pharmaceutical strategies, its many complications, their treatment, etc.. All of them represent great progress in deepening knowledge about diabetes, its medical treatment. Medicine may be winning the battle to control blood sugar levels, but it is losing the fight against diabetes. Even in countries where medical care is widely accessible, evidence shows that focusing diabetes treatment only on lowering blood sugar is not the solution, it is environmental and social factors that are deepening this panepidemic of the 21st century.

Medicine may be winning the battle to control blood sugar levels, but it is losing the battle with diabetes. The fact that diabetes, a highly preventable disorder, has reached epidemic proportions speaks to the dysfunction of Public Health. Its roots are mainly in environmental and social factors that can be changed. The focus must be shifted from medical care to public health. We must focus on the causes, nutrition, physical activity and the causes of the causes, economic, psychosocial and physiological problems. Intellectual, financial and political resources should be shifted from drug treatment of diabetes and its complications to prevention. Time has shown that it is not easy...

Although COVID-19 provided an opportunity to rethink how money is spent on health, little has changed in terms of how much is invested in public health. EU countries spent an average of 2.8% of health expenditure on preventive care.... It seems secret economic interests try to maintain the status quo.

CLOSING IT…

Diabetes will be the defining disease of this century. Future generations cannot be eternally condemned by a diabetogenic lifestyle. How the health community, and society at large, will address diabetes in the next two decades will shape population health and life expectancy for decades to come. The world has yet to understand the social nature of diabetes and has underestimated the scale and true threat that the disease poses. The change is requested as soon as possible.
