Fights bacteria and anti-aging, the extraordinary values of chestnut honey
The chestnut tree belongs to the same family as beech and oak. For thousands of years, the chestnut has been a main source of food for the mountainous areas of the Mediterranean where cereals could not be grown.
The sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa), which is mainly used for honey, grows abundantly not only in Europe, but especially in Albania.
The honey produced from it has a strong taste and aroma with a slight hint of bitterness. This honey, rich in pollen, mineral salts and tannin, has a high amount of fructose that avoids crystallization and low acidity.
Chestnut honey has a dark color ranging from brown with a yellow tint to a light shade of black. Sometimes we also find amber.
Its herbal aroma is unique. The honey is not very sweet and the aftertaste is slightly bitter. The taste is persistent and is mostly preferred by those who like strong and not too sweet honey.
Chestnut honey is rich in minerals, iron, vitamins B and C.
It strengthens muscles, improves blood circulation, helps the liver and stomach, removes fatigue, strengthens the immune system and has positive values in the respiratory and digestive systems.
Walnut honey is a good source of potassium, calcium and manganese. It contains more minerals than any other honey.
The richest sources of chestnut honey are Albania, China, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Zvira and France. Secondary sources of this honey are Austria, Belgium, Germany and Greece.
Outstanding antioxidant values
Various studies have compared the antioxidant content of several types of honey and found that chestnut honey had the highest amount of antioxidants.
This dark-colored honey contains extraordinary amounts of phenolic acids, compounds that strengthen the antioxidant capacity of chestnut honey.
Chestnut honey fights bacteria
Honey is well known against bacteria and mold. But some of them, including chestnut honey have greater abilities against bacteria.
A team of researchers from Spain discovered that chestnut honey had the power to fight bacteria such as Staphylococcus and Escherichia coli. Other types of honey that were included in the study did not have the ability to fight these bacteria.
The somewhat bitter taste of chestnut honey makes it ideal to complement some dishes. If you like intense flavors, then you can spread this honey on toast or use it as a natural sweetener for tea.
High amounts of antioxidants help remove free radicals and protect the body from the effects of aging. Consequently, regular consumption of chestnut honey rejuvenates you.
Since it fights bacteria, honey is ideal against acne. Use directly on the skin as a mask or combine with oatmeal to fight inflammation and cleanse the skin.
