Today, we commemorate the 557th anniversary of the death of the National Hero, Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg, who passed away on January 17, 1468 in Lezha.
Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, personifies not only the most important figure of the Albanian people, but also an entire era of national history. The figure of our national hero is associated with the more than a century-long struggle against the Ottoman occupation.
Gjergj Kastrioti, born in 1403, was a prominent figure in Albanian history, part of the noble Kastrioti family.
His father was Gjon Kastrioti, leader of the largest cities of that time, Kruja and Mirdita, and his mother was Vojsava.
He received education and military training at the Ottoman court, where he was sent as a hostage in 1415 and again in 1423, a period that provided him with deep military and diplomatic knowledge.
After returning to his homeland, he rose as the leader of the Albanians, creating a broad alliance that opposed the Ottoman advance in the Balkans.
Skanderbeg is an unforgettable name in national history, who represented the courage and unyielding resistance for the freedom and dignity of Albanians.
