The judoka from Kosovo, Akil Gjakova, surrendered to the Kosovo Police on Tuesday evening, after he was wanted for the violence he had inflicted on his wife. Even though he was charged with the crime of "domestic violence", the judoka decided not to face justice, but changed his mind by surrendering yesterday.

"Kosovo Police - Regional Police Directorate in Pejë, based on the law for the publication of the photo with other notes of the person wanted with the authorization of the Basic Prosecutor's Office in Pejë, in order to locate and consequently arrest him, issues: Request for cooperation with citizens . The wanted person is: AKIL (Luan) GJAKOVA, born on 04.01.1996 in Peja. The defendant is wanted for the criminal offense: "Domestic violence", - it is informed in the notification given by the Kosovo Police.

While he is already facing accusations of violence, the Kosovo Judo Federation has come to his defense, saying that they believe that he is innocent. 

"The Judo Federation of Kosovo strongly condemns any form of violence and we are deeply concerned about the recent events in our country. We make it a priority to protect and promote gender equality, which is proven by the outstanding achievements and excellent support of our female athletes. We believe in Akil's innocence and hope that the law enforcement agencies will solve the case as soon as possible. Therefore, we invite the media to show prudence in handling this case and stop smearing and public judgment of one of the figures who continues to promote the positive image of our country," they wrote in their response.
