The new chief diplomat of the EU: To really reduce the existing tensions between Kosovo and Serbia
The new chief diplomat of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, said that the only way for the membership of Kosovo and Serbia in the EU is the normalization of relations between the two countries based on the Ohrid agreement. Kallas, who succeeded the Spanish Josep Borrell in this post, held separate meetings in Brussels with the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia, where they also talked about the attack a year ago in Banjska in the north of Kosovo and the explosion five days ago in the Ibër canal. - Lepencit in Zubin Potok.
Kalla's meeting with Kurti and Vucic was not part of the dialogue for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, a dialogue that has been mediated by the EU for several years now.
"I met President Vucic and Prime Minister Kurti. The only path to EU membership is through the normalization of relations between them, based on the Ohrid Agreement. I welcomed their willingness to cooperate after the latest terrorist attack. The perpetrators must face justice", Kallas wrote, referring to the recent explosion in the Ibër Lepec canal in the north of Kosovo.
According to the new head of European diplomacy, she will work for the Western Balkans region, as she said, "so that we can move forward on a path with the enlargement process.
"It is to the benefit of the EU and these countries. And the other way is to try to really reduce the existing tensions, so that we can move forward in the dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade, where I am also ready to invest my time", wrote Kallas.
Vucic: We had an open and difficult conversation
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, for his part said that he had an "open and difficult conversation" with the new European chief diplomat.
"The high representative of the European Union for foreign and security policy spoke about the necessity of dialogue with Pristina, the solution of the Banjska case and the imposition of sanctions against the Russian Federation. I have responded in accordance with the politics and interests of Serbia", President Vučić wrote.
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, meanwhile, said that he spoke with Kaja Kallas about the issue of Kosovo's European integration and relations with neighboring Serbia, asking the new structures of the European Commission to insist on the implementation of the Ohrid Agreement and the signing its from Serbia. Kurti said that he informed Mrs. Kallas about the investigations related to the attack in Zubin Potok and repeated the request to Serbia to hand over Millan Radoicic to the Kosovar authorities. Millan Radojçic and his group are responsible for the armed attack on September 24 of last year in Banjské in Zveçan where a Kosovo police sergeant was killed.
The Ohrid Agreement is still pending
The Ohrid Agreement, which contains 11 articles, which Kurti insists should be signed by Serbia, among other things, foresees a level of self-management for the Serbian community in Kosovo, mutual recognition of Kosovo-Serbia state symbols, so that Serbia does not block Kosovo's membership in international organizations, and asks Prishtina and Belgrade to implement all previous agreements reached during the dialogue between the two countries.
The leaders of both the countries of Kosovo and Serbia together with the leaders of other countries of the Western Balkans also met the new president of the European Council, Antonio Costa. The latter had dinner together with all the leaders of the Western Balkans, before the high-level meeting between the EU and the Western Balkans, which is expected to be held on December 18 in Brussels.
