Paris Olympic Games/ 40 countries may boycott, ban of Russian athletes is required

About 40 countries want the Russians not to be part of the Paris Olympics, these countries may boycott the upcoming event, Poland's sports and tourism minister Kamil Bortniczuk said. His comments came after Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia rejected an International Olympic Committee (IOC) plan to allow Russians and Belarusians to compete in 2024.
Ukraine has threatened to boycott the Paris Olympics if this happens. But the IOC said any boycott would only punish the athletes. Bortniczuk said a coalition of 40 countries, including the UK, US and Canada, should be built to support the boycott.
The IOC announced last week that it would explore a "pathway" to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in Paris under a neutral flag, adding that "no athlete should be prevented from competing solely because of their passport". However, this brought a lot of backlash from several countries.
The UK government said the plan was "a world away from the reality of war". Ukrainian sports minister Vadym Guttsait said international federations should uphold the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes, which was imposed by the IOC's executive committee shortly after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
