General and local elections cost Kosovo around 18 million euros, CEC warns there

The Central Election Commission in Kosovo says it does not have the budget to organize a new round of elections if the formation of a government fails for the second time by November 19.

The state budget spent nearly 18 million euros on organizing the national elections at the beginning of the year and the local elections on October 12 and November 9, respectively. If another round of elections is imposed on the country this year, then the Central Electoral Commission will face another challenge, as its officials have said that they do not have the financial means at their disposal.

If the second mandated candidate, Glauk Konjufca, also fails to form a government by November 19, early elections should be held in the second half of December at the latest.

"The CEC does not have any planned budget funds for holding a possible new electoral process this year, therefore, if there are elections, the CEC will prepare a budget plan which, as usual, as it has done in the past, will be forwarded to the Government of Kosovo for approval," stated Valmir Elezi, spokesperson for the CEC.

The CEC has not indicated how much holding a pair of early elections could cost.

"The CEC has not planned any concrete amount, because this will be done if we have an official announcement of the election date," Elezi emphasized.

KOHA has requested information from the incumbent Government on whether there are funds in the budget for the possible holding of early elections and whether there is legal and budgetary space to reallocate the necessary funds for them, but has not received a response as of Monday.

8.7 million euros were planned for the general elections on February 9, while according to CEC reports, the amount spent is around 7.9 million euros.

And for the local elections that took place in the first round in 38 municipalities, and in the second in 18 of them, a budget of 10.5 million euros was planned. But how much was spent, according to the CEC, will be known after the conclusion of the entire process. According to this institution, based on experience from past electoral processes, the final cost is lower than the planned one./ koha.net
