NASA plans to build a 'lunar village', the first sustainable human settlement on the Moon within the Artemis program
NASA has unveiled an ambitious plan to build a "real village on the moon", which will not be just a research base, but a sustainable human settlement, according to "TheSun".
The project is part of the well-known "Artemis" program, which aims to return humans to the Moon for the first time since the historic "Apollo" missions of 1969-1972.
According to NASA administrator Sean Duffy, speaking at the International Aeronautics Congress in Sydney, the goal is to establish a "lunar village" that will support permanent human life on the lunar surface.
The Artemis program successfully launched with the Artemis I mission in 2022, an uncrewed flight to the Moon.
The next step, Artemis II, is planned for 2026 and will be the first crewed test of the Orion spacecraft and the new Space Launch System (SLS).
Four astronauts will travel around the Moon and return to Earth, paving the way for Artemis III, which will carry out the first American manned landing on the Moon in more than five decades.
During the Artemis III mission, two astronauts will use the Starship Human Landing System developed by SpaceX to land on the surface. They will remain on the Moon for about six and a half days, conducting research and scientific experiments.
Subsequent missions, "Artemis IV" in 2028 and "Artemis V" in 2030, will take longer, including building permanent structures for living and working on the Moon.
Proposed concepts for this "lunar village" include greenhouses for food production, productive housing units, and solar panels for sustainable energy.
Some of these modules are expected to be built with the help of giant robots that will "print" the structures using materials from the lunar surface itself. The goal is to create a self-sustaining environment where astronauts can stay for months without relying on Earth's supplies.
Sean Duffy also stated that the United States and President Donald Trump's administration* are determined to "win the second space race" against China, which has advanced lunar programs.
"We will return to the Moon, and this time, when we raise our flag, we will stay there," he said, underlining the US's goal of maintaining technological and strategic superiority in space.
This monumental step is expected to be the foundation for the future journey to Mars, as the experience gained on the Moon will help build similar bases on the red planet.
In this way, the Moon is becoming the great gateway for deep space exploration and a new era of human presence beyond Earth.
