The most powerful passports in the world for 2025

The latest update of the Henley Passport Index, which is compiled based on IATA data and ranks 199 passports according to the number of destinations they can visit without a visa, marks notable changes. According to the latest data, the United States passport, which has consistently been in the top positions for the past two decades, has now fallen to 12th place, while the Greek passport occupies 6th place, providing visa-free travel to 186 countries.

The index confirms the dominance of Asian countries. Singapore remains at the top with 193 visa-free destinations, followed by South Korea with 190 and Japan with 189.

In the European area, the picture is mixed: the United Kingdom falls to 8th place compared to the previous review in July, while country groups such as Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain and Switzerland score high performances with 188 destinations.

For the US, the decline is cumulative. In 2024, it was in 7th place, moved to 10th in July and now, in October, is outside the top ten. US citizens travel visa-free to 180 countries, while the revision is related, among other things, to the entry restrictions applied by Washington: the US allows visa-free entry to 46 countries, with additional measures such as “visa tie-up” requirements of $5,000–15,000 for applicants from seven African countries.

In Africa, Seychelles is the highest-ranked country with visa-free access to 155 destinations (26th place), followed by Mauritania (now Mauritius) in 29th place with 148 and South Africa in 53rd place with 102. Then come Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, eSwatini, Morocco, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania, Gambia and Ghana. In contrast, Nigeria is among the ten weakest passports in the world, in 96th place along with Ethiopia, Lebanon and Myanmar, with visa-free access to 44 countries. The weakest passports in the world also come mainly from Asia, with Pakistan, Yemen, Iraq and Syria occupying the bottom positions.

For the top 10 countries in 2025, the Index records the following picture in terms of the number of visa-free destinations: at the top is Singapore (193); followed by South Korea (190) and Japan (189); then, with 188, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, Switzerland; then, with 187, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Netherlands; in 6th place are Greece, Hungary, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden (186); followed by Australia, Czech Republic, Malta, Poland (185); then Croatia, Estonia, Slovakia, Slovenia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom (184); Canada (183); and finally Latvia, Liechtenstein (182).
