The discovery of Earth-like planets is close, scientists report

New Earth-like planets may soon be discovered, scientists claim. In particular, they developed a "star node", capable of analyzing the blue-green light emitted by stars.

Astronodes can detect tiny changes in the light of a star created by orbiting exoplanets, potentially revealing an Earth-like planet.

The discovery was made by physicists from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge.

"This is an exciting development that will allow us to study smaller planets in longer orbits than ever before, with the aim of discovering the first 'terrestrial' planet orbiting a sun-like star," said Dr. Samantha Thomson from Cambridge.

Heriot-Watt Professor Derrick Reid said the shorter wavelength light the new system can examine is "rich in atomic absorption features of interest to astronomers". He added that "our new approach provides for the first time a continuous sequence of optical indicators from ultraviolet to blue-green that serve as a precise wavelength scale in this part of the spectrum."
