Ice that freezes at room temperature discovered

A strange form of water ice that solidifies at room temperature under extreme pressure has been discovered. It has been named Ice XXI because it is the 21st solid form of ice known to date.

Ice XXI is characterized by a tetragonal crystal structure with relatively large repeating units composed of 152 water molecules.

To achieve this, researchers at the Korea Institute of Standards and Science Research used an anvil-shaped diamond cell to compress water to pressures approximately 20,000 times normal atmospheric pressure in ten milliseconds.

The pressure was then slowly released, over the course of a second, before the process was repeated. Meanwhile, the researchers used X-rays to capture a million images per second to observe changes in the crystal structure.

Ice XXI could be one of the possible intermediate stages on the path from water to an exotic stage called ice VI, believed to be present inside icy moons like Titan and Ganymede.
