Jane Austen statue unveiled for 250th anniversary of her birth

A statue of the famous writer Jane Austen has been unveiled in the courtyard of Winchester Cathedral to mark the 250th anniversary of her birth.

The inauguration ceremony took place after a solemn service in the cathedral and the statue was unveiled by Nigel Atkinson, Lord of Hampshire.

The work was created by artist Martin Jennings, who is also working on a sculpture of Queen Elizabeth II that will be placed at the national memorial in London.

Jennings has depicted Austen at life-size, about 1.7 meters tall.

"Jane Austen's grave is a beloved place for many, but it does not fully do justice to her moral vision and literary legacy. This statue aims to represent her as a powerful and elegant figure, with her characteristic features and writing desk," said Lord Atkinson.

During the service, actors Joanna David, Susannah Harker and Adrian Lukis, known from the 1995 BBC television adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice," read excerpts from the novel.

Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, where her father was a vicar. After his death in 1805, she moved to Chawton, where she wrote her best-known works, and then to Winchester, where she died in 1817.
