Balanca in office 3 years beyond the mandate, on Monday the Parliament announces

On Monday, October 13, the Assembly will discuss one of the most important institutional positions in the country, the Ombudsman. This issue has been pending for more than three years, as Erinda Ballanca's mandate officially ended in May 2022, but despite this, she has been forced to remain in office as the Assembly is unable to find a replacement.

We recall that Erinda Ballanca was elected to office as Ombudsman on May 22, 2017, with a 5-year mandate, based on the Assembly's decision no. 70/2017, following the famous Rama-Basha agreement. Although her mandate has ended, she continues to exercise her duties until the election of her successor, as provided for by law.

In the previous legislature, there were several attempts to find a consensual name between the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party, but these efforts failed. The condition of 84 votes needed to elect the Ombudsman, as well as the consolidated practice of entrusting this position to a candidate proposed by the opposition, proved to be an obstacle to reaching an agreement.

Now, after a long period of inaction in this regard, the Parliament seems to be returning seriously to find a replacement for Ballanca, as on Monday, at 5:00 PM, the Committee on Legal Affairs and Public Administration will discuss precisely the announcement of this vacancy, inviting all interested parties to apply to Parliament for the position.

This time, with 83 guaranteed votes in the Assembly and the possible support of three mandates from the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the Socialist Party is theoretically able to elect an Ombudsman even without the opposition's agreement.
