As soon as the name of the comedian Florian Binaj was made official as the opposition candidate for the municipality of Tirana, supported by four parties, several photos immediately began to circulate on the network, where he appeared wearing an apron in one of Erion Veliaj's disgusting propaganda activities, to distribute food to people in need. In one of the images, Binaj performs with a microphone in his hand, while Lali looks at him happily, as if he has recruited another screen star into his fold. In the other, they pose together behind a plate of soup.
Apparently, this poster with the former mayor transformed into a symbol of corruption has greatly disturbed the one who will preach completely different values during the upcoming campaign. So much so that it has forced him to lie.
Invited to Grida Duma's "Top Story" show, the former Orange actor was put in the position to defend himself with untruths about these photos. Saying that it was about an event from 2014-2015, when Veliaj was still a minister and had not won the municipality. He told the story like this:
"A lady calls me and tells me she works at the senior citizen reception office... we organize food collections and she invites me to meet them. I go there and meet old people, great joy, hugs, one of them looked like my grandfather," he said (full video below).
Moving from the guest's seat and approaching Grida, he acted out the old scene like this: "While I was serving the elders, I saw a shadow that quickly came, saying "Lal, shoot quickly", and I didn't know how to react. I didn't know that it was Veliaj's activity, what should I say, I should tell the elders to take the bread knife because this one came. Veliaj wasn't like that at that time, he didn't have the perception that he has today. Since then, we haven't been together," Binaj justified himself.
In this not-so-honest story, there are two things that stand out. The first is the time when it happened. As the left-wing media extracted from the archives, the event took place on April 9, 2018, it was an activity of the Tirana municipality, with Roma families, on the day of Orthodox Easter. Who Veliaj was at this time, there is no need for comments. He had broken his solemn promise not to grant construction permits in the city center by defiling a campaign pledge, he had been fired from his job and had closed down shows that investigated the murder of Ardit Gjoklaj at the Sharra Landfill, so he was far from being an angel.
Neither the three-year manipulation of the date, nor the excuse that he did not understand the nature of the mayor, hold up.
Even less credible is the claim that Binaj was trapped, and Lali got close enough to take a photo. In another image, Binaj is seen giving a speech, alongside Veliaj, in front of the Roma audience (photo below), did they secretly steal his words?
Then, anyone who has participated in even one of the "mis en scene" of the former municipal staff knows well that the area was surrounded by bodyguards and municipal police so that no unwanted cameras could penetrate. That the environment inside was filled with municipal employees, photographers and cameramen waiting for the boss to arrive. So even if they had trapped him with a phone call, Binaj would have realized in time that this was not an ordinary charity activity and would have had plenty of time to "escape", that is, before the soup distribution began and Lali approached him stealthily.
A third argument. If Binaj was trapped, as he claims today, he did not make any denials when he saw that, after the event, Veliaj used him in a special status (photo below), in his well-known style of working together with critics and not dealing with gossip. This is a special sign that the comedian had consciously accepted Veliaj's "soup".
Are we dealing with a crime here? Did Binaj commit any sin in November 2018? Of course not. His biggest mistake is the hypocrisy and ease with which he lied now as a candidate. It speaks not only about the way he perceived the campaign, but also about the unprofessionalism of those who are preparing him to face him and who must have expected that he would be asked for an explanation for this past event.
