Buka case, SPAK investigation against Arben Ahmetaj, 14 witnesses questioned

The Special Prosecution Office has opened a new file and is investigating a transfer of 3 million euros from Albania to Austria, money that is suspected to have been benefited by Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj.

This is a transfer made by businessman Lirim Fejzullai in 2014, shortly after the privatization of the Buka enterprise, an action that, according to SPAK, caused 7 billion lek damage to the state budget.

" We have come into contact with a large amount of money that has been transferred from Albania to an EU country that is being verified," said prosecutor Gokaj.
Attorney Henrik Ligori, who defends Ahmetaj's interests, reacted in court and stated that the prosecutor was in no hurry to close the investigation if there is new evidence to be presented, as it cannot be a regular process with surprise acts.

Elvin Gokaj told the court that he was forced to notify the charge of abuse of office for the "Buka" file due to the statute of limitations, while the case for the money transfer was separated and based on the letter of recommendation received from Austria.

SPAK is investigating whether or not the money transferred to a second-tier bank in Austria was benefited by the former deputy prime minister.

Arben Ahmetaj is on the run and is currently in Switzerland. SPAK has requested his extradition as it is investigating him for corruption and money laundering in the incinerator case and has imposed a "prison arrest" measure on him.

For the "Buka" case, Ahmetaj was investigated at large and is being tried under ordinary procedure. 14 witnesses are expected to testify in the trial, including former Finance Minister Shkëlqim Çani.
