Gonzato responds to Berisha: It's time to turn the page, but the statement

Ambassador Silvio Gonzato responded to Sali Berisha's inappropriate statement about sexual orientation on "Top Story".

In an interview with Grida Duma, the ambassador said that he considers the statement about his personal life unpleasant, and that he was affected by "the implication that I was doing things as an EU ambassador because of my personal history."

Grida Duma: Do they, this commission, have the right to say something after Sali Berisha said in front of the parliament building, addressing you, in an inappropriate manner? Did the commission with which you have, let's say, official cooperation react appropriately?

Ambassador: Listen, I know there's been a lot of talk about this. I think it's time to turn the page, to be honest. But let me just say one thing. On a personal level, the statements that were made in that case, but also in other cases regarding my private life, I would simply define as unpleasant, to be honest. And they don't affect me that much. You know, I'm an adult, as you said, an older man. I know my choices, I've made them and I'm sticking to them. I don't have to justify anything. What bothered me in that case was the implication that because of these personal choices, these personal choices were clouding my judgment and that I was doing things as an EU ambassador because of my personal history.

This is something I couldn't accept, because I believe I'm doing my job professionally, with integrity. And so I was really happy that my boss, Commissioner Kos, stepped in and said she had full confidence in me and that's all I needed. I don't need anything else. I don't need any commission to say whether this was right or wrong.
