The bank accounts, cash and crazy purchases of the Veliaj couple

From the corruption scheme that led Erjon Veliaj to prison, the unbridled luxury and the staggering expenses that his wife, Ajola Xoxa, has incurred immediately draw attention, as evidence of an extravagant standard of living in which our rulers live. Among the amounts of money that attract attention are almost 900 thousand euros of online clothing and jewelry purchases by Ajola Xoxa in the last four years.

With a simple calculation, it turns out that Veliaj's wife spent about 220 thousand euros per year on jewelry and clothing alone, at least from what SPAK has discovered so far. In the announcement it distributed to the media, SPAK said that "It has provided sufficient evidence to conclude that citizen AX, herself or through other persons close to her, for a period of about 4 years, has made online purchases consisting of clothing, jewelry, etc., in the amount of 86,721,175 lek, or almost 900 thousand euros.

"These expenses do not appear to have been declared in any of the Periodic Declarations of the head of the Tirana Municipality or the persons associated with him," the Special Prosecution Office added.

The money came from businessmen, mainly builders, who, by pouring considerable sums of money into Ajola Xoxa's companies and NGOs, obtained building permits from Erjon Veliaj. This bribery scheme has also brought some of the well-known builders in Tirana, such as Gent Sula, Shkëlqim Fusha, Fatmir Bejtashi, etc., to the SPAK's doorstep.

It is their money that ensured a sheikh-like standard of living in the Veliaj family, from whom a villa in Qerret i Kavaja has also been seized.

The amounts that SPAK has discovered in the bank accounts and cash of the Veliaj-Xoxa couple are not small either, as it appears that they kept their daily expenses hidden in a safe in the offices of Ajola Xoxa's company "Partners Law".

During the search conducted there, agents of the National Bureau of Investigation found a sum of 95 thousand euros, most of them in 500 euro bills. In addition to the euros, about 15 thousand dollars and 665 thousand lek were found.

"During the control carried out at the offices of "PL" shpk, managed by citizen AX, who is also the sole owner, an amount of cash of 95,350 Euros (most of them in 500 Euro denominations), 14,900 USD and 665,000 Lekë were found in a safe and seized as material evidence," SPAK's announcement states.

The crazy purchase figures and the cash they kept in the safe depict a different duo than what appeared in public. Behind the facade, Erjon Veliaj and Ajola Xoxa were swimming in corruption money and did not even take care to hide the money obtained from bribery.

The investigations into Erjon Veliaj's wealth began with a complaint filed by an anonymous person named Nesti Angoni, who revealed links between the mayor and the money laundering scheme of his friend, Elman Abule.

Erjon Veliaj and Ajola Xoxa have appealed to the court the seizure of their phones and money.

Shortly before, after learning about the evidence prosecutors had, Veliaj said that the searches at his home had been conducted without a court order. He complained about the “intimidation and aggressive violence” that prosecutors had shown towards him and his wife, Ajola Xoxa.

Veliaj even made a comparison commonly used by the opposition, according to which SPAK works with the methods of State Security.

"The persons called with the qualification "persons in knowledge" have been faced with threatening approaches and "security"-style violence, being forced through pressure and intimidation to testify against themselves," it is stated in point 4 of the statement.

In recent weeks, Prime Minister Rama was seen at several joint activities with Erjon Veliaj. In fact, after the SPAK search of Veliaj's house, Rama said that the public lynching of the mayor and his family is disgusting.

"Erion Veliaj's family life is being violated by the public trial conducted not by the relevant institution, but by all those who are engaged in that trial. His dignity is being violated by prosecutors and low-ranking judges in media clubs, or hidden behind the screens of portals," said Rama, adding that "The public lynching of the mayor is disgusting, the search for the guillotine for him is scandalous," said Rama, who had previously excluded Veliaj from the structures of the Socialist Party of Tirana./ Lapsi.al
