Gonzato's warning: If you touch the justice system, you compromise your chances for the EU

The European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, in an interview on "Top Story" with Grida Duma, touched on some of the most sensitive issues of recent weeks.

Ambassador Gonzato delivered a message 'on behalf' of the European Union that if you touch the justice system, you 'compromise your chances of joining the European Union'

Grida Duma- You said not to touch the constitutional structure that is now, which means that you have seen any threat from Parliament to politically interfere in the control of some of the justice structures?

Ambassador : No, not really. But I felt the need to clarify some things, because people say, yes, but there are certain aspects of the judiciary that are not working so well. And of course, you know, you did a big reform in 2016. Now we are in 2025. Maybe it is time to look at how certain aspects of the reform are working. But what I am saying is that the foundations, the architecture, the structure of governance cannot be touched, because the independence of the judiciary from the executive and from the legislature must be respected. Otherwise, we lose the most important achievement that Albania has made.

Grida Duma: So, if politics wants to remove one of the structures, GJKKO for example, is this possible through Parliament?

Ambassador: The parliament is the expression of the people of Albania. So, you know, they can pass laws, they can change the constitution. But clearly, the message coming from Brussels is that if you do this, then you compromise your chances of joining the European Union, because, as we have repeatedly said, justice reform with the architecture is in place, and this is an absolute requirement.
