In 5 municipalities of the country, 13 candidates competed for their leadership. In Vlora, Berat, Mat, Cërrik and Tepelena, out of 334,539 thousand citizens with the right to vote, according to CEC data by 18:00, only 50,469 citizens exercised their right to vote, or 18.45% of the electorate. This is the lowest participation, proving a sign of the wear and tear of the political system.

The reported data clearly show that voter turnout remains closely linked to age, confirming that the higher the age, the higher the likelihood that citizens will participate in the electoral process. In all cases analyzed, from Berat, Tepelena, Vlora, Mati and Cerrik, the older age groups clearly dominate, while the younger generation continues to show marked indifference towards the ballot boxes.

In Berat, the highest percentage of participation belongs to the age group over 65 with 29.26%, followed by the 55-64 age group with 26.62%. while young people 18-24 years old rank last with only 11.86%. A similar trend is observed in Tepelena, where the percentages are much higher overall, but with the same ratio between generations: 65+ reaches 51.71%, 55-64 years old 46.21%, while the youngest under 34 years old do not exceed 25%.

In Vlora, where overall participation is lower, the picture remains the same. The over-65 age group has 18.57%, followed by 55-64 with 16.77%, while among young people, participation drops significantly, dropping to only 7.87% for ages 18-24 and 8.36% for 25-34. These figures show that even in larger urban areas, the younger generation remains less present in democratic processes.

Overall, data from all municipalities highlight a persistent generational gap. Participation increases significantly after the age of 45 and peaks among the elderly, while younger age groups remain significantly more passive. This recurring pattern shows that political involvement in Albania is stronger among generations that have experienced electoral processes longer and have a more traditional connection to voting, while young people seek new forms of engagement and representation to feel directly part of public decision-making./ SCAN
