Accused of rape and sexual misconduct, the rapper suffers badly
A Dutch court has sentenced a former coach of "The Voice of Holland" to two years in prison for rape.

Ali B, 42, was found guilty of raping a woman known as "Naomi" in 2018, a charge he has denied.

The rapper, one of several Dutch The Voice stars accused of sexual misconduct, will appeal the sentence, his lawyer told public broadcaster NOS.

The 2022 scandal was the first wave of #MeToo to rock the progressive Netherlands, which has since been rocked by several other incidents of sexual abuse.

Ali B was also accused by a contestant on The Voice of forcibly fondling her, touching her genitals and performing sexual acts on her.

While prosecutors found the woman's claims credible, the Dutch court dropped the charges for lack of evidence.

He was also convicted of the attempted rape in 2014 of Dutch artist Ellen ten Damme during a stay in Morocco, where they were recording a song for a television programme.

"Ali B's actions have severely damaged the physical integrity of the victims," the decision said. "He was driven by his sexual needs without regard for the will of his victims or how his behavior would affect them."

The court emphasized the courage of the victims to denounce given the public profile of the performer.

A string of sexual abuse allegations have undermined the purpose of The Voice, where music professionals choose contestants after hearing them sing.

The allegations raised questions about how the show's creator and reality TV king John de Mol dealt with the scandal.

De Mol, who also created reality show Big Brother, admitted he had known about an allegation of inappropriate messages from The Voice of Holland host back in 2019 but had taken no action. A case against the musician was reportedly dropped and the show was suspended in 2022 by broadcaster RTL.
