"Hired detectives for..."/ Cher reveals difficult details from her life and marriage to Sonny Bono!
In her new autobiography, Cher: The Memoir, Part One , Cher has shared intricate details about her relationship with Sonny Bono, her former music partner and husband, who died in 1998.
During the 1970s, while working on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour , their relationship soured. At one point Cher admitted to Bono that she felt an attraction to a guitarist named Bill and that she wanted to have a relationship with him. According to Cher, Bono was always afraid she would leave him, a feeling he admitted years later.
When Cher decided to leave, Bono told her,
"America is going to hate you for destroying our relationship."
Cher ended up staying with a friend, where she met Bill. After a fight, she discovered that Bono had taken revenge by spending the night with Bill's girlfriend. Angry and determined to leave, she asked Bill to accompany her to San Francisco. For safety reasons, they traveled in separate cars, but ended up getting lost in the fog of the city.
Meanwhile, Bono had hired private detectives to track them down. Cher and Bill took refuge in a hotel, where they stayed in separate rooms to avoid gossip. However, they ended up spending the night together.
The next day, detectives found Cher and brought her back to Los Angeles. Despite their split, Cher and Bono returned to work together at CBS for a while before finally divorcing in 1975.
