Merz's popularity drops, only 18% of Germans would like him to run for chancellor again

Only 18% of Germans would support a decision by Chancellor Friedrich Merz to run again for a second term, according to a poll published today by the Forsa Institute for the RTL network.
According to the results, 73% of respondents said they would not approve a new candidacy for the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the 2029 federal elections.
Even within the right-wing camp, support for Merz is not unanimous. Only 47% of supporters of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) would support him for a second term, while 41% would be against.
Merz, who turns 70 tomorrow, is seen by many as an experienced figure, but also as a representative of an older political generation. More than half of those surveyed (52%) said they thought "it would be better if the chancellor were younger."
