Banned for two years for doping, CAS reduces the punishment for the Bolivian

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has reduced the ban for Bolivian midfielder Boris Cespedes from two years to 15 months, after finding that the banned substance was likely to have been taken through a medication prescribed by the national team's medical staff.

Bolivian midfielder Boris Cespedes will be out of football for 15 months after the Court of Arbitration for Sport decided to reduce his initial two-year ban handed down by FIFA for violating anti-doping rules.

Cespedes, who has played for Swiss club Yverdon-Sport and the Bolivian national team, tested positive for two banned substances following a doping test conducted after the World Cup qualifying match between Bolivia and Uruguay on March 25, 2025.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee imposed a two-year suspension on the player in August 2025, also counting the period of provisional suspension that had started on May 14, 2025.

The footballer appealed to CAS, arguing that the substance had entered his body through a medication prescribed by the national team's medical staff for treatment, at a time when he was seriously ill and unable to verify what was being given to him.

After a hearing in January, the CAS sole arbitrator found that, although Cespedes had committed an anti-doping rule violation, he had proven with sufficient probability that the substance had come from the medication prescribed by doctors.

"Consequently, the sole arbitrator decided that a period of suspension of 15 months is proportionate and appropriate to the circumstances of this case," the CAS statement said.

The appeal was partially accepted and the sanction against Boris Cespedes was changed by reducing the period of suspension.
