The Republic of North Macedonia celebrates its 34th anniversary of independence

The Republic of North Macedonia today marks the 34th anniversary of its independence from the former Yugoslav federation, through a popular referendum, which declared it an independent and sovereign state.

The dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), of which the country was a part, occurred as a result of a series of political upheavals in the early 1990s.

In a referendum held on September 8, 1991, the citizens declared themselves an independent and sovereign state. After the declaration of independence, Turkey was among the first countries to recognize Macedonia's statehood, followed by other countries.

After the declaration of state sovereignty was voted, Kiro Gligorov was elected the first president of the independent Republic of Macedonia. In monetary terms, the state became independent with the introduction of the denar on April 26, 1992, and later formed the army, which it commemorates on August 18.

The Republic of Bulgaria was the first to recognize Macedonian citizenship, followed by recognitions from Turkey, Slovenia, Croatia, Russia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The international legal subjectivity of the state was finally confirmed on April 8, 1993, when, by acclamation at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Macedonia was admitted as the 181st full member of the world organization.
