Zuckerberg: Meta will expand freedom of expression on its platforms

This week, the CEO of the company 'Meta' announced that there will be a wider range of freedom of speech on Facebook and its other online platforms. As Voice of America correspondent Michelle Quinn reports, the Meta company's decision follows President-elect Donald Trump's continued criticism of limiting freedom of expression to conservative groups.
Meta is one of the tech companies most heavily criticized by President-elect Donald Trump, including its Facebook and Instagram platforms. Since the end of the US election, Meta has been working to improve its relationship with Mr Trump as he prepares to return to the White House. The company has contributed $1 million to President-elect Trump's inauguration fund.
This week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the changes, which he says will ensure a wider range of free speech on Facebook and other platforms. President-elect Donald Trump and other conservative leaders have long accused Facebook of censorship.
"It's time to go back to our roots when it comes to freedom of expression on Facebook and Instagram," he said. Trump supported the decision of the company 'Meta'.
"Honestly, I think they've made huge improvements," he said.
In the United States, Facebook will end its fact-checking program in collaboration with outside experts. Instead of this program, the company 'Meta' will do the verification of the facts of the posts based on the notes of the community of users of its platforms. Restrictions will be lifted on topics such as immigration and gender identity. Reactions to the changes have been mixed.
"The decision could have really damaging consequences. We already know that women, people of color, the LGBT+ community and other groups such as climate scientists and activists face a real wave of discrimination, hate and attacks online," said Ava Lee of Global Witness. ".
While there may be more conservative content on Facebook in the short term, the bigger question is whether billionaires in the tech industry control the content on their platforms.
“The freedom you now enjoy on these platforms, especially on Meta, is very limited. It's not actually based on any kind of protection," says Daniel Cochrane of the Heritage Foundation.
Zuckerberg stressed that he would work with the Trump administration to protect freedom of expression globally.
"We will work with President Trump to resist efforts by governments around the world to limit freedom of expression," he said.
However, aligning with the Trump administration on free speech is likely part of the tech industry's strategy to achieve its long-term goals, such as entering the Chinese market.
"That buys them a lot of power for long-term geopolitical positioning," says Kate Klonick of the University of St. John's. Facebook is expected to implement these changes in the coming weeks./ VOA
