Slovak PM calls on EU to lift sanctions on Russian oil and gas

Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has called for the European Union to end sanctions on Russian oil and gas imports to address the energy crisis stemming from the war in Iran.

Fico stated, after a conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, that the EU should resume dialogue with Russia, so that member states can secure missing gas and oil supplies from all sources, including Russia.

The leaders of Hungary and Slovakia are unique within the EU because of their maintaining relations with Moscow.

Oil prices have risen sharply since the US and Israel launched their war on Iran on February 28, disrupting shipments from the Gulf and creating what the International Energy Agency has called the largest oil supply disruption in history.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced greater security cooperation with Turkey after a meeting with his counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Istanbul on Saturday, as Kiev seeks to leverage its war experience on the international stage.
