Unbelievable! The crocodile gets himself pregnant

The first case of a crocodile that got pregnant has been identified in a zoo in Costa Rica. The female crocodile produced a fetus that was 99.9% genetically identical to herself.

The phenomenon of so-called "virgin birth" has been found in other species of birds, fish and reptiles, but never before in crocodiles. Scientists say the trait may have been inherited from an evolutionary ancestor, so dinosaurs may also have been capable of self-reproduction. The research is published in the Royal Society journal, Biology Letters

The egg was hatched by an 18-year-old American crocodile at Parque Reptilania in January 2018. The fetus inside was fully formed, but was stillborn and thus did not live. The crocodile that laid the egg was found when she was two years old and kept separate from other crocodiles for the rest of her life.

This case was analyzed by Dr. Warren Booth, who works at Virginia Tech in the US and has been studying virgin births, scientifically known as parthenogenesis, for 11 years. Dr Booth analyzed the fetus and found it was more than 99.9% genetically identical to its mother - confirming there was no father.

He told BBC News he was not surprised by the revelation. "We see it in sharks, birds, snakes and lizards, and it's extremely common and widespread." But this kind of species had never been encountered before.
