Donald Trump: Ukraine should immediately agree to direct talks with Russia

US President Donald Trump has demanded that Ukraine "immediately" agree to direct talks with Russia in an effort to end the war.

This reaction comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his team was "ready to meet" with Russian representatives following Vladimir Putin's suggestion for peace talks, provided an unconditional ceasefire begins on Monday.

Russia's president tabled the proposal for talks in Istanbul on Thursday, after European leaders, including Keir Starmer, threatened him with new sanctions if Russia did not comply with an unconditional 30-day ceasefire that begins on Monday.

However, in a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump said he was "beginning to doubt that Ukraine will make a deal with Putin."

He urged them to accept the invitation to meet "immediately," adding "hold the meeting now."
