Beijing criticizes US vice president for calling Chinese people "peasants"

China on Tuesday criticized US Vice President JD Vance for referring to Chinese people as "peasants" in an interview that has sparked widespread anger and mockery on China's internet - and comparisons to Vance's self-proclaimed "hillbilly" background.
Speaking to Fox News last Thursday, Vance defended President Donald Trump's market-smashing tariffs and criticized the "global economy."
"What has the globalist economy brought to the United States of America? And the answer is, basically, it's based on two principles - taking on a huge amount of debt to buy things that other countries make for us," Vance told the news show "Fox & Friends."
“To make it a little clearer, we borrow money from Chinese villagers to buy the things those Chinese villagers produce.”
Asked about Vance's comments at a regular news conference on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said: " It's surprising and disrespectful."
Clips of Vance's interview surfaced on the Chinese internet this week, sparking a strong reaction in a country where factory floors are filled with industrial robots, cities are embracing domestically produced electric vehicles and remote counties are connected by a nationwide network of high-speed rail.
